What We’re All About
Scripture Union is an international, interdenominational, non-profit Christian organisation. For over 140 years in Nigeria and over 155 years globally, we have remained committed to nurturing children, young people and families through the Bible, prayer and Christian service.
Our Vision
Children and young people nurtured to Christian maturity, following Jesus and transforming families and the nation of Nigeria.
Our Mission
Working with churches to make God’s good news known to children, young people and families, and to encourage people of all ages to meet God daily through Bible reading and prayer.
Our Aims and How We Started
Our aims — working with the churches, Scripture Union aims to:
- Make God’s good news known to children, young people and families.
- Encourage people of all ages to meet God daily through Bible reading and prayer, come to personal faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, grow in Christian maturity, and become committed church members and servants in a world in need.
How Scripture Union Began
Scripture Union began in England in 1867 through a young man named Josiah Spiers. At the time, children were often left to play outside while church services were taking place. Josiah gathered them to hear Bible stories and sing songs. This work became the Children’s Special Service Mission (C.S.S.M.) and later Scripture Union.
From those beginnings, Scripture Union has grown into an international ministry serving in more than 130 countries. Its work in Nigeria began in 1885. Scripture Union is interdenominational; it is not a church denomination and does not seek to become one.
